January 5@theLake Race Report

  • the fifth in the 2018-19 “5@theLake” series, eleven runs in all
  • again o’ so humid
  • only 1 pb as a result – others came close
  • 41 starters
  • 4 first-timers, including 2 newbies

It is always great to run at the Lake, and Saturday was no exception. The weather gurus were forecasting a 6:00am southerly, that didn’t happen. Light rain threatened, but after a half dozen drops, it left us, and leaving us with big humidity.

Only the one pb was achieved, and it was a big one. Veronica Stevens was having her fourth start at the 5@theLake. Her 3 previous runs were in the 48s, and this go, we have a 45:30. Great effort Veronica, great result. And with the pbs she has been gaining in the 3.5k handicap, Veronica is truly achieving. We were having a quiet chat post-event. Veronica advised today’s goal was to finish in the 45s. Tick. And the goals don’t stop there; there are more to be ticked off. Truly, way to go!

Steve Pappas lead the field from the outset. About 2k, if I recall correctly, Lilian Molesworth, Martin Dinh and Ben Swinfield followed. Ben’s Sunday morning trail training brought him rewards as he moved from 4th to 2nd. Martin tried too hard to get back to Ben and suffered. 6ft training time (till March) is Ben time. Watch him go for the next 2 months. (ps 6ft 2018: finishing order Lilian, Martin, Ben. Bring on 2019).

This event is not necessarily about the quickest. It really is about doing your best against yourself, and maybe then the others in your age categories.

There are 5 attachments to reflect the results.

  • Rep1 – Across the Line/Chip Times
  • Rep2 – Pointscores
  • Rep3 – Performance Points – Cumulative for 2018-19
  • Rep4 – Chip Times for 2018-19
  • Rep5 – Across the Line – in Age Category

The first report is straight-forward - reporting the chip time of all finishers.

By category, the quickest were:

Males:    Steve Pappas 19:50, Ben Swinfield 20:37 and Martin Dinh 20:49

Females:  Lilian Molesworth 21:12, Jacqui Viterale 23:43 and Siobhan Kelly 24:29

Juniors (under 16) – Male:  -

Juniors (under 16) – Female:  Jessica Gurung 26:19

The second report reflects the calculated points and our real champs of the day, based on the international formula for gender and age against world record, and reported in ‘points’ sequence. It can be that the early finishers may not be the highest point-scorers and vice-versa.

Our winners:
Steve Pappas  478 points  -  first across the line
Sue Chenery  471 - eleventh
Dean Turner  463  -  sixth
Lilian Molesworth  461  -  fifth

The third report is a cumulative result to-date of performance point-scores.

The 5@theLake is conducted through the Westies year. The competition winner will be the one with the highest cumulative point-score from eight of the eleven events.

The fourth report is a listing of the 2018-19 participants with their recent times history. You can track results across the month, including consistencies, personal bests, et alia. It can be seen that the majority of our participants this month returned slower efforts than last month when conditions invited faster times.

The fifth report reflects the participants’ placings within age and gender categories.

To all our participants, thank you for being part of the event.

Again, a special thank you to Chris and Antonina for setting up the water station, and always to Dave for the fruit.

Thanks as always to the many helpers with the set-up and the mat put-away.

Top efforts all.

Winners of the draws:

(Please remember you must be present to receive the draw prizes, else re-drawn).

Random placing draw winners were #23 Pauline Kelly, #29 Arlene Caraballo and #11 Sue Chenery. The lucky tickets were won by Jessica Gurung & Bill Rannard.

Goss:
We had two newbies join us on the day, Amaan Fiaz and Peter Clarisse, and have now become members. Talking to Peter, he was a member 15 years ago, and won the 10k handicap in April 2004. Welcome to Westies boys.

One of our newer members, Michelle Harvey who joined us back in June and competes across all our events, has been re-located with work to Melbourne for 12 months. We wish Michelle all the best and we hope to catch up with Michelle again in the future.

Vic.
