Handicapper's Report - March 3.5k Handicap

  • seventh run of the 2018-19 series
  • second run on the new course
  • 78 starters
  • new course records
  • only hundredths of a second in some results
  • 22 equalled or bettered handicap
  • 11 ran their pb on any Westies 3.5k course
  • another 28 recorded their pb time on the 2nd time used new course
  • there were 20 who did not run last month, and so ran their pb on the new course
  • 6 newbies
  • 15 juniors
  • 121 have completed at least 1 run in the 2018/19 series
  • 11 have now completed all 7 runs

Early finishers included newbies, and 3 who ran so well that they broke handicap by greater than one minute and so ineligible for the trophy. Great runs by Koby Caraballo, Trevor Ching (last month’s winner) and Crofty, all pbs but no trophy.

Our winner was Paul Moro who beat Aly Trinh across the mat by 79 hundredths of a second. So so close. Great contest. Caught just prior to the mats was Chris Moyhnam who finished in 3rd. Congratulations to all.

Our fastest on the day was David Riches in 12:55, who bested young Jack Wedgwood by 46 hundredths of a second.

Our fastest female was Kayley Sommer who ran 15:28, a personal 23 sec pb, and a new course record, bettering Jacqui Viterale’s 15:38 last month; Jacqui finished 6 places behind Kayley, and in doing so also ran a 3 sec pb, 15:35. Round 3 next month. Congratulations ladies.

Kayley and Jack now hold the under 16 course records, at 15:28 and 12:55 respectively.

Emma Trinh in 16:59 took the under 19 record from her sister, and Nathan Mudie lowered his record by 10 secs to 13:13.

All up we had 15 juniors which is our best in the shorter course handicap for many a year.

This was the 2nd run on this course. 58 of the starting field ran last month, and 37 of this 58, or 64%, ran a faster time and therefore their course pbs. Of all that ran, 11 posted their best time on any Westies 3.5k course. Obviously a very good morning for fast times.
