Handicapper's Report - February 3.5k Handicap

  • sixth run of the 2018-19 series, and now half-way
  • a new course
  • new course records
  • 74 starters
  • 74 pbs
  • 7 newbies
  • 4 qualified participants bettered or equalled handicap
  • 9 participants achieved a better time on the new course
  • and a big thank you to our course marshals

A ‘runner-friendly’ morning greeted our 74 starters in readiness to take on the new course. This change was considered necessary given concerns of increasing congestion on the pathways and at the second turnaround as a result of our increasing participation. The flatness of the course remains unchanged; there is no second turnaround and much two-way traffic is eliminated. So, a faster course and faster times are to be expected.

On course, we had three marshals to ensure we all got it right. A special thank you to Lisa Sommers, Brian Bennett and Martin Dinh for volunteering and showing our field where to go, or not go ...

Our line-up included 7 newbies to the 3.5k, including 4 from their first 10k last week. Welcome to the Westies 3.5k. Our first nine to cross the finishing mat were first timers, qualifiers and re-qualifiers. 3 of our next 4 were our podium champs, with a fast qualifier in between.

Our trophy winner was Trevor Ching in 23:41, 2nd Antonina Fieni in 26:23 and 3rd Siobhan Kelly in 16:14. Congratulations to all.  Pretty close: 7 secs between Trevor and Ant. All three returned faster times on this course than their pbs on the old course, as did three others of our top 10 place-getters Pam Kennedy, Peter Watson and Jacqui Viterale. And Dave Kennedy also. Well done to each and every one of you.
