Handicapper's Report - December 3.5k Handicap
Another morning of great running with 76 participating – a new record for our 3.5k handicap that commenced in February 2014 – and a great sight to behold as the finishers snaked the bend to the finish mats. 48 runners finished within a minute of their handicap. Great job Mr Ellison.
The first couple to cross the mats were qualifiers. John having his first run and Owen on-the-comeback after an absence of 18 months. Next home was Pat Lewis, still on a high from her Masters Games success and running her best time of 19:56 since February’18, breaking handicap by 1 minute and 22 seconds. Veronica Stevens pursued Pat to the mat, running her second pb in 2 months, 29:13, and also breaking handicap, by 1 minute and 9 seconds. Great efforts ladies. Too too good on the day; for to be eligible for the trophy you cannot better handicap by over 1 minute.
Over the next 2 minutes, 48 finishers crossed the mats, including our trophy winner Alan Rivet. Alan ran 16:30, a 32 sec pb following up on his 36 sec pb last month. Alain is in the form of his life, becoming the first to win both the 10k and the 3.5k handicaps in the same month. Congratulations big time Alain. 😊😊😊
2nd and 3rd respectively, separated by 1 second, were Ian Forest-Jones in 16:43 and Nathan Trinh 16:40. The starting times of Ian, Alain and Nathan were all within one 5 second interval. A true race within the race. Super efforts boys.
Our fastest on course was Jack Wedgwood in 13:20. He was in a hurry to finish and get to cricket as he was next in to bat. Jack achieved something special. Jack is a junior, and only once previously has a junior (u16) been fastest on course in the 3.5k handicap, and that was back in December 2014 when Nathan Mudie did the honours. Plaudits to Jack, and also to Nathan who is still running well and faster than 4 years ago.
All up there were 11 pbs, and 4 had their best result in over 9 months. Great running.
