Handicapper's Report - 3.5k Handicap November 2018

  • third run of the 2018-19 series
  • again great conditions for running the 3.5k
  • 63 starters
  • 23 bettered handicap
  • 14 pbs
  • 2 missed pb by 1 sec
  • 11 juniors
  • and again 4 newbies for the third month running

Ideal running conditions greeted our 3.5kers for another month, very unlike last Saturday for the 10kers. 14 pbs, a couple of near misses and best runs, and 23 bettering their handicap were all testaments to a great morning for running.

We had 4 newbies to this run including new members Jane and Colin Price and long term 10k regulars Zenita and Julio. All under-estimated how quick they would be, and your handicapper was taking notice. The first four to cross the mats were Jane and Colin, followed by Koby Caraballo and Hai Le. All were running a qualifier run.

The next person to cross – and 2 seconds, yes only 2 seconds under the 30 minute threshold, bettering handicap by 1 minute and 2 seconds was Siobhan Kelly. It was the 2 seconds that broke Siobhan’s grip on the trophy. Siobhan came to the line hard, 100% for effort. A chip time of 16:27. A big 1 minute pb. But ineligible for the trophy by the break of handicap by over 1 minutes, and two seconds. Rules allow only the 1 minute. Great run, great effort Siobhan.

Next home, 3 seconds behind was Veronica Stevens running her 3rd qualifier. Similarly to be congratulated for the big effort was Veronica with her 59 second pb. Veronica ran 30:41. Well done. If not for qualifying...

One second away came our trophy winner Desie Joannides, her best result since her pb back in August’17. Desie crossed two seconds over the threshold. It was all so close. Congratulations Desie.

Coming home not so far away were our first two juniors of the morning. Firstly, Jessica Gurung was running her 3rd qualifier and with a 1 second pb of 17:37. Her previous 2 runs were both 17:38. So so consistent. 3 runs, 1 second span. And then our 2nd place-getter Kevin Tran in 14:35, another pb, this go 49 secs. Kevin passed the very loud Paul Croft just before the mats. Crofty, 3rd,  is to be congratulated for his best result since his fall and rehab now over 12 months ago.

All up there were 14 pbs, and Michelle Harvey and Reg Sexton deserve a mention for their 1 second misses. So close. Blame the electronics 😊

Thank you to our members who helped set-up and take down. Thanks to Davo who marked up the course and the super photos. And we wouldn’t have an event without the handicapper, so well done again Rob Ellison.

A special thank you to Paul Webb who gave a presentation as part of the 50-year anniversary celebrations.
