Handicapper's Report - February 10k Handicap
Early morning rain and even happening during the set-up was looking to be an omen for great running conditions, until ... the rain stopped and the humidity came out and had a say. Notwithstanding, most times this run were better than the seriously heat-influenced results of last month.
We had 60 starters, our best in the 10k since December 2012. We had 5 having their first run. Welcome to our club and to Westies running. 3 of our newbies have now become registered members 😊. We have now had 108 start the 10k in the 6 runs this series.
Again, our first four to finish were first-timers or qualifiers, all newbies. The next to finish was our trophy winner Colin Price, in 71:56. Colin bettered handicap by 1 minute. He was the only qualified participant in the field to return a pb. Congratulations Colin. Great effort. Great result.
Next to cross the mats, was Jacqui Viterale running her 3rd qualifier on return from injury, and her 52:24 is now back to her times of 12 months ago. Well done Jacqui.
Not far behind was 2nd place Chandra Gurung in 48:45. Chandra also ran 2nd last month (49:16) in the 10k and also won the 3.5k. On fire man! This result is his best since his pb in March’18. Last series was inconsistent. This series all effort. Going great. Next home was one determined walker, Ken Mudie, in 72:49, doing his second qualifier and knocking 1:48 off his previous effort. Ken finished just in front of Ben Swinfield, officially 3rd, and right on handicap, in 44:30; his best time since August.
And the humidity kept everyone else behind handicap. The conditions will get better. As always, congratulations and thank you to everyone that took part.
What was very noticeable was the support given to runners towards the rear of the field. Family members and friends who had finished returned to the course to encourage other runners. Great sportsmanship all round.
Thank you to those who helped at the wet set-up and afterwards with Chris at the pack-up, to our vital and magnificent volunteers on drink stations (with new boy Martin), and to Davo for marking up the course and for the great photos. Thanks to Nathan issuing chips and bibs prior to running himself. Thanks to Lisa for the electrolyte doopers. Thanks to Rob E always. We just wouldn’t have the successful event without all of you.
And please don’t forget – the water cups we are now using are recyclable, and being collected for that purpose.
