Westies conquer Urbanathlon – on and off course

Matthew Timson and Karl Safi very successfully contested the Men’s Health Urbanathlon on Sunday,
finishing 3rd and 4th respectively in impressive times of 46:15 and 47:41. This is on top of last years effort where Matt was also 3rd and Karl 9th.

This was the second running of this event in Sydney. This year it was a different course, effectively a 10+k run with 10 ‘urban’ obstacles thrown in. Each obstacle must be bettered before going forward to the next. This all happens around the Pyrmont and Barangaroo foreshores and through the Rocks.

You can race it, or go around and have a fun time, the latter very evident by the laughter and smiles. Brett Jonathan was one Westie in that latter category going around with his mate in 118:08. Brett had a good time and got more for his entry fee than our ‘up the front champs’. There are no smiles for the racers.

Westies volunteers were on hand to marshal the Start, and to set-up and marshal Obstacle 1, The Spider Web, and the lead-in to this. We can report first-hand that at Obstacle 1, Matt and Karl were among the frontrunners among an enthusiastic going-for-it pack.

Over the course, volunteers were short on numbers, and when our Westies were finished out on the course, they were re-deployed to the finish line. Having been on the working sidelines of these and other events for a couple of years, organisers and entrants both owe great gratitude to all volunteers.

Thank you to the Westies who were able to answer the call to help out and work on Sunday. Truly, greatly appreciated.
