2016 June 10km handicap results

by Vic Anderson

10k Handicap results for 4th June, the morning before the big rains

We had 39 starters (32 last month) and 7 (18) ran their pb on the new course. Conditions were wet underfoot, but no serious water on the course.

We had 6 runners having their first run, regulars from the 3.5k who were stepping up and taking advantage of qualifying in the 10k handicap, intending to run both handicaps in 2016-17.

We had 5 who showed up late and missed their official start time. Rafic Awad has the best story, with his being breath and drug tested, despite advising the constabulary that their detaining him was causing him to be late for the Westies handicap.

First to cross the line was Ismael Salazar qualifying with his first 10k handicap.

Not far behind was our trophy winner, Ben Swinfield, who caught Tony Farrell within metres of the mats to cross 2 seconds ahead. Both Ben and Tony ran their best times on the new course, Ben by 43 secs and Tony 32 secs. Tony has said he had nothing left. Both were backing up from the 100k they ran 3 weeks before.

Congratulations on great runs to you both.

Next to cross the line was Leidy Castro, also running her first 10k qualifier, and in a time 3 minutes faster than expected.

Qualifiers excluded, Ben and Tony were the only two who broke handicap.

Next home and officially 3rd was Steve Pappas. Steve was the back-marker of 39, and the 5th to cross the line, so obviously moved through the whole field bar four. His chip time of 39:58 was the fastest of the day. Nice one Steve. Our fastest female was Lilian Molesworth with 42:17.

We had 5 others who pb’d on the course this run:

Eamon McCann by 2m:52s,

Mick Kilham by 2:43

Alan Whitmore by 2:06

so very significant improvements from these guys,

Ian Rowles by 45s, and

Walter Jacobsohn by 24s.

well done fellas.

Thank you to all who participated, and to the many who helped with the set-up, and this go, especially the shelter to protect the timing equipment. Thanks to Rob Ellison with the conduct of the handicap and to Di Karageorgis for her help with issuing chips re-race. All truly appreciated.

Our winner of random spot draw was #19 was Sue Reynolds.
